Fix Windows Update Error 0x80070643 - Manual Catalog Install
You have probably already restarted your computer twice only to see that same failed update message sitting in your queue. When Windows Update refuses to cooperate, it usually means the background service is stuck on a specific package that just will not install through the automated tool.
Why this happens
The error 0x80070643 typically triggers when a specific update package fails to download or install correctly via the standard Windows Update service. Bypassing the service and installing it manually forces the system to process the file directly.
What you will need
You just need your browser and the KB number of the update that keeps failing, which you can find in your Windows Update history.
Steps
-
01Open your Start menu, go to Windows Update, and identify the KB number for the failed update.
-
02Navigate to catalog.update.microsoft.com in your web browser.
-
03Search for your specific KB number in the search bar.
-
04Locate the version that matches your system, such as Windows 10 x64 or Windows 11 x64, and click Download.
-
05Click the link inside the pop-up window to download the .msu file.
-
06Double-click the downloaded .msu file to begin the installation.
-
07Click Yes when prompted by the installer and allow the process to finish, which usually takes 1 to 3 minutes.
-
08Restart your computer.
-
09Open Windows Update again and click Check for updates to verify that the KB number is no longer listed as failed.
