Fix Microphone Not Detected in Windows 11
It is frustrating when you are ready to jump on a call and your microphone refuses to pick up any sound. Windows 11 often blocks access to your mic through privacy settings or driver conflicts after a recent update, effectively muting you without warning.
Why this happens
Windows 11 periodically updates its privacy security policies, which can silently toggle off app permissions for your microphone. If this is not the case, the system may simply be routing your audio to the wrong input device or using a corrupted audio driver.
Steps
-
01Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
-
02Go to Privacy and security, then click Microphone.
-
03Toggle on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone.
-
04Scroll down the list of apps and toggle on the switch for the specific application you are trying to use.
-
05Right-click the speaker icon in your taskbar and select Sound settings.
-
06Under the Input section, click the dropdown menu and ensure your correct microphone is selected.
-
07Speak into your microphone to verify the volume bar under the Input section moves.
-
08If it still does not work, go to Windows Update in the Settings sidebar.
-
09Click Check for updates to download and install any pending audio driver patches.
-
10Restart your computer to apply the changes.
