Fix Subnautica 2 Won't Start - Launch & Crash Troubleshooting

You click play on Steam and nothing happens, or the game just instantly dumps you back to your desktop. You just want to play, and having the game refuse to open is incredibly frustrating when you have no error code to work with.

Why this happens

Most launch failures are caused by corrupted shader cache files, permission blocks from your OS, or outdated graphics drivers. Sometimes Windows Defender mistakenly flags the game executable as a threat, preventing it from running.

Steps

   Open Steam and find Subnautica 2 in your library

   Right-click Subnautica 2, select Properties, go to Installed Files, and click Verify integrity of game files

   Close Steam, right-click the Steam icon on your desktop, and select Run as administrator

   Visit the Nvidia or AMD website to download and install the latest drivers for your specific graphics card

   Disable Steam Overlay and any third-party overlays like Discord or MSI Afterburner

   Press Win + R, type %LocalAppData% into the box, and press Enter

   Locate and delete the folder containing Subnautica 2 configuration and shader cache files

   Add the folder C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Subnautica 2 to your Windows Defender exclusions list
