Fix Print Screen Not Working in Windows 11
You press the Print Screen key expecting a screenshot, but either nothing happens or your system ignores the command entirely. This usually happens because a recent Windows update remapped the key to open the Snipping Tool, or a background app like OneDrive is intercepting your input.
Why this happens
Windows 11 often defaults the Print Screen key to trigger the Snipping Tool interface instead of simply copying the image to your clipboard. Additionally, cloud storage apps and gaming overlays can hijack the key to save files automatically.
Steps
-
01Open Settings and go to Accessibility then Keyboard.
-
02Locate 'Use the Print Screen button to open screen capture' and toggle it OFF.
-
03If it still fails, right-click the OneDrive icon in your system tray, go to Settings then Backup, and uncheck 'Save screenshots I capture to OneDrive'.
-
04Close any other background apps like Discord or gaming overlays that might be capturing the key.
-
05If the issue persists, go to Settings then Apps then Installed apps.
-
06Search for 'Snipping Tool', click the three dots, select 'Advanced options', and click 'Repair'. Use 'Reset' if the repair does not work.
-
07On laptops, ensure you are holding the 'Fn' key while pressing Print Screen, as some manufacturers hide the command behind a function layer.
-
08If you use a Logitech keyboard, open Logi Options to ensure the key is correctly mapped to the standard Print Screen function.
