Fix Outlook Email Stuck in Outbox - Quick Troubleshooting
You are staring at an email that just won't leave your outbox, even though you hit send ages ago. Your Outlook send queue is likely jammed, which is a classic headache that happens regardless of your version of Office.
Why this happens
The Outlook send queue often gets stuck due to a momentary sync error or an attachment that exceeds the server size limit. Moving the item to Drafts forces the application to re-process the message.
What you will need
No special tools are required, just your mouse and access to your Outlook application.
Steps
-
01Check the bottom of your Outlook window for a 'Working Offline' status; if present, go to the Send/Receive tab and click 'Work Offline' to toggle it off.
-
02If still stuck, close Outlook completely.
-
03Reopen Outlook and immediately navigate to your Outbox folder.
-
04Right-click the stuck message, select 'Move', then 'Other Folder', and choose 'Drafts'.
-
05Open the email from your 'Drafts' folder and click 'Send' again.
-
06If it fails, open the message and ensure your attachments are under 33 MB.
-
07If the issue persists, press the Windows key, type
outlook.exe /safe, and press Enter to launch in Safe Mode to test for problematic add-ins. -
08If it sends in Safe Mode, go to File > Options > Add-ins to identify and disable the conflicting extension.
