It is incredibly frustrating when you are trying to open a PDF and Adobe Acrobat freezes or just vanishes from your screen. This usually happens because of an outdated app version or a conflict with your graphics settings, but we can usually clear this up in a few minutes.

Why Acrobat crashes

Most crashes are caused by outdated software, corrupted installation files, or conflicts between Adobe's rendering engine and your system's graphics drivers.

Steps

  1. 01
Open Acrobat, click the top-left Menu, select Help, and choose Check for Updates.
  2. 02
Install any available updates, restart the application, and test your PDF again.
  3. 03
If it still crashes, go to Menu and select Preferences.
  4. 04
Click the Multimedia and 3D tab on the left and uncheck Enable hardware rendering for legacy video cards, then click OK.
  5. 05
Restart Acrobat to apply the change.
  6. 06
If the issue persists, go to Menu, select Help, and click Repair Installation.
  7. 07
Allow the process to complete, restart your computer, and relaunch Adobe Acrobat.
