Fix Discord Not Opening on Windows

KitsuneGuide Watch on YouTube ↗

You click the Discord icon and absolutely nothing happens, leaving you stuck without your chat. This usually happens because a previous session got hung in the background and is preventing a new one from starting.

Why this happens

Discord often fails to launch because a ghost process is still running from your last session, preventing the new instance from initializing.

Steps

  1. 01
Look at the system tray near your clock in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  2. 02
Click the small arrow to reveal hidden icons if you do not see the Discord logo.
  3. 03
Right click the Discord icon and select Quit Discord.
  4. 04
Try launching the application again to see if it starts normally.
  5. 05
If it still refuses to open, right click any empty space on your taskbar and select Task Manager.
  6. 06
Type Discord into the search box at the top of the window.
  7. 07
Right click every result that appears in the list and select End task.
  8. 08
Close Task Manager and launch Discord from your desktop or start menu.
