If your file copy keeps freezing or throwing error 0x8007045D, your external drive is struggling to read data from a specific physical location. This is usually caused by a loose connection, a failing drive sector, or an aging hardware component that needs immediate attention.

Why this happens

This error is an I/O device error, meaning Windows cannot successfully read or write to a specific part of your storage device. It often points to a physical defect on the drive platter or flash memory.

What you'll need

You will need a spare USB cable to test connectivity and the free tool CrystalDiskInfo to verify your hardware health.

Steps

  1. 01
Unplug your external drive, switch to a different USB port on your computer, and swap your USB cable if possible.
  2. 02
Download and run CrystalDiskInfo to check the drive health status.
  3. 03
If the status is Caution or Bad, stop immediately and copy any critical files to a different location, as the drive is physically failing.
  4. 04
If the status is Good, click the Start menu, type cmd, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
  5. 05
Type chkdsk X: /f /r replacing X with your external drive letter, then press Enter.
  6. 06
If prompted to dismount or schedule the scan, type Y and press Enter, then restart your computer to allow the repair process to run.
