Fix Outlook Email Stuck in Outbox - Quick Troubleshooting

KitsuneGuide Watch on YouTube ↗

You just hit send on an important email, but it is still sitting in your Outbox with no sign of leaving. It is incredibly frustrating when the message just hangs there, blocking your other outgoing mail. This usually happens because your local send queue has jammed or you have inadvertently toggled your connection state.

Why this happens

The Outlook send queue often hangs when a connection is interrupted or an attachment exceeds your server's size limit. Moving the item out of the queue resets the process and clears the stuck flag.

Attachment size limits

If your email contains large files, the server will reject it repeatedly. Ensure your total attachment size is under 33 MB for new Outlook.

Steps

  1. 01
Check the status bar at the bottom of the Outlook window to see if 'Working Offline' is enabled. If it is, go to the 'Send/Receive' tab and click 'Work Offline' to toggle it off and restore your connection.
  2. 02
If the email remains stuck, close Outlook completely to stop it from trying to send the message.
  3. 03
Reopen Outlook and navigate immediately to your 'Outbox' folder in the left sidebar.
  4. 04
Right-click the stuck email, select 'Move', then 'Other Folder', and choose 'Drafts'.
  5. 05
Open the email from your 'Drafts' folder, verify the recipient and attachments, and click 'Send' again.
  6. 06
If it still fails, press the Windows key and type outlook.exe /safe to launch Outlook in safe mode. If the email sends now, a third-party add-in is likely interfering; you can disable these under 'File' > 'Options' > 'Add-ins'.

Still not working?

If you are still unable to send, check your account settings under 'File' > 'Account Settings'. If your account shows as disconnected or requires a re-authentication, you may need to remove and re-add your profile. If you see an error code specifically related to your server (like 0x80040115), verify your internet connection or check your company's VPN status.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my email if I move it to the Drafts folder?

No, your email contents and attachments remain fully intact when moved to the Drafts folder.

Why does my email keep getting stuck after I move it?

This usually indicates the email attachment is too large for your provider, or a faulty Outlook add-in is blocking the send process.

Does this fix work for both new and classic Outlook?

Yes, the queue reset via the Drafts folder is a universal fix for both versions of the Outlook desktop application.
