How to Disable AI Overviews in Google Search (udm=14)

If you are tired of AI summaries taking up space at the top of every search, you are not alone. You can force Google to go back to the classic, link-only list view by using a specific URL parameter that skips the AI overview box entirely.

Why this works

Google includes a hidden parameter, udm=14, which tells the search engine to display only web results. By creating a custom search engine in Chrome, you essentially force your browser to use this clean version of Google every time you search.

Steps

  1. 01
Open Chrome, click the three-dot menu in the top right, and navigate to Settings.
  2. 02
Click on Search engine in the left sidebar, then select Manage search engines and site search.
  3. 03
Scroll to the Site search section and click the Add button.
  4. 04
Enter Google web for the name, @web for the shortcut, and https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14 for the URL, then click Add.
  5. 05
Find your new Google web entry in the list, click the three dots next to it, and select Make default.
  6. 06
Open a new tab, type a search term into the address bar, and press Enter to verify that the AI summary box no longer appears.

Still not working?

If the AI overview persists, verify that you set the new custom search engine as the default rather than just adding it. If you sync your browser across multiple devices, you may need to repeat these steps on each machine as search engine preferences are stored locally per installation.

Frequently asked questions

Will this delete my Google account history?

Does this work in browsers other than Chrome?

Yes, you can use the same udm=14 URL parameter in the search settings of Edge, Brave, or Vivaldi to achieve the same result.

Can I still access the AI features if I want them later?

Yes, simply go back to your search engine settings and switch your default search provider back to the standard Google entry.
