Fix Bluetooth Connected But No Sound on Windows

KitsuneGuide Watch on YouTube ↗

You are staring at your Bluetooth headphones, they say they are connected, but your computer is stubbornly playing audio through the laptop speakers instead. It is frustrating when Windows refuses to route sound to the device you actually want to use, but this is usually just a simple handshake failure between your OS and your hardware.

Why this happens

Windows often defaults to the last used audio device or gets stuck on a generic driver output instead of switching to your Bluetooth peripheral. This creates a disconnect where the connection is active for data, but the audio stream is misdirected.

Steps

  1. 01
Right-click the speaker icon in your taskbar and select Sound settings to see which device is currently active.
  2. 02
Click the dropdown menu under Output and ensure your specific Bluetooth headset or speaker is selected rather than your monitor or laptop speakers.
  3. 03
Right-click the speaker icon again and open Volume Mixer to ensure the specific app you are using is not muted and is correctly mapped to your Bluetooth device.
  4. 04
Go to Settings > Bluetooth and devices, click the three dots next to your device, and select Disconnect, then wait three seconds and click Connect to force Windows to renegotiate the audio channel.
  5. 05
If it is still not working, remove the device from your Bluetooth list entirely, set your headphones to pairing mode, and click Add device in Windows to perform a clean setup.

Still not working?

If you are still not hearing audio after re-pairing, check your Device Manager under Bluetooth to ensure your drivers are not showing a yellow exclamation mark. If the drivers look correct, try testing your headphones with another device like a phone to rule out a hardware failure in the headset itself.

Frequently asked questions

Does this mean my Bluetooth headphones are broken?

Not necessarily. If your headphones work fine with a phone or tablet, the issue is almost certainly a Windows driver or settings conflict.

Will I lose my saved Bluetooth settings if I remove the device?

Removing the device only clears the pairing handshake from Windows. It will not affect any internal settings saved on your headphones.
